Area of improvement: Milwaukee has the 2nd worst jobless rate by Sura, October 22

From a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article on Oct. 16:

“Among the 50 largest U.S. cities, only Detroit had a higher unemployment rate than Milwaukee in August, according to a new study at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.”

“Compared with other large cities, Milwaukee has a low rate of college-educated residents and a high degree of segregation, which places central-city job-seekers away from suburban job growth, Levine said.”

We are fortunate that we have a very high rate of education in the 3rd District, but we need strong leadership to work on creating more jobs, particularly in the central city. Kudos to those businesses that employ people with criminal records and help them become participating citizens.

  1. I think one of the issues that’s very connected is that we’ve recently found out that it voting can be a crime in Wisconsin. Wisconsin law allows former felons who have completed their probation and parole to vote, but that’s really too confusing to work well. Recently, a women was sent back to prison for voting while she was still on probation/parole, so many, many people are scared to even try to vote. For example, if one has a balance on their cafeteria account in prison, one is not yet eligible to vote. Many who have were arrested for a felony but were convicted of misdemeanors think they can’t vote. In fact, those convicted of misdemeanors in jail can even vote! There’s a group of Wisconsin citizens/groups that are working to change this so that taxpaying citizens who have paid their “debt to society” are eligible to vote and we call ourselves the “Restore the Vote Wisconsin” Coalition.
